Most people have the mind-set "It won't happen to me!" Unfortunately, it can. Natural disasters are becoming increasingly common, and with today's budget cuts, many emergency personnel jobs have been eliminated. During a major catastrophe, resources such as food, water, and first aid could be stretched thin. If "Hurricane Katrina" has taught the citizenry anything, it is this; You cannot depend on others for basic necessities. Emergency preparedness begins at home.

There are many ways you can prepare for the unexpected. First develop a disaster plan. Practice escape routes, so family members know where to meet. Also, it's imperative to have an out-of-state (or area) emergency contact, so family members can reconnect with one another after an emergency.

Another way to protect you and your loved ones is to take First Aid and CPR classes. Knowing how to staunch the flow of blood, dress wounds, and immobilize broken bones, is essential for you and your family's well-being, especially, during a disaster. Equally important, is getting to know your neighbors. During a major disaster, first responders may not be able to reach your neighborhood for many days. You and your neighbors will need to rely upon one another. Set up search and rescue teams. Purchase and store tarp's and other survival gear. You can make your neighborhood a safer place to live. Furthermore, donate blood. During major emergencies, blood supplies can run low. Your donation will help save lives.

In addition, to the above precautions, it is important to store emergency supplies. There are reputable on-line companies that sell emergency supplies. Some of the food offered has a shelf life of thirty years. The uncertainty of today's economy, combined with world strife, may cause mass food shortages. Don't be caught unprepared and go hungry. Also, remember during a major disaster, stores will be closed. You will not be able to purchase food. Solar generators are also a necessity for disaster preparedness. They are an especially helpful during extended power outages. Not only will they help keep your food cold, solar generators will also give you light without fuel.

If cost is prohibitive, start small. Buy a few items whenever you shop. Over time, you can stockpile enough goods to handle any disaster. Do not put off the decision to become prepared!
